On View: I See You by Zhenya Gershman
Artishouse is pleased to present “I See You,” a solo exhibition by Zhenya Gershman.
Zhenya Gershman moved from Los Angeles to accompany her 15-year-old daughter, who was accepted as the youngest ever Kovner Fellow to The Juilliard School of Music. As Gershman walked through a busy street in New York City, she noticed a homeless man holding up a cardboard sign: “I might as well be invisible”. She stopped in her tracks and told him: “I see you!” Thus the idea for the exhibition was born.
This voyage into the unknown inspired Gershman to paint what she saw and experienced daily on her journey to her new studio space: Artishouse. These paintings, made with a combination of brushes and sculpture tools, create a 3D visual effect and entice the viewer for a tactile experience. Gershman believes that the artist’s duty is to apply their talent to call attention to where help is most needed. In her words: “together with responsive viewers, we can make a real change.”
Zhenya Gershman is a painter, art historian, and educator. Born in Eastern Europe, Zhenya is based between her two studios in Los Angeles and New York City. She is known for her dramatic monumental portraits of iconic public and private figures. Gershman's portraits are featured in public and private collections including Douglas Simon, Richard Weisman, and Arte Al Limited Museum in Santiago, Chile.
